  • Bases-loaded walk in 10th gives Cubs win (AP)

Milwaukee Brewers' Prince Fielder(notes) reacts to striking out against the Chicago Cubs in the 10th inning of an MLB baseball game in Chicago, Friday, July 3, 2009. Chicago won 2-1.

Jake Fox's persistence and patience in drawing a game-winning, bases-loaded walk Friday should come as no surprise. He's a determined guy with big minor league numbers trying to find a permanent job with the Chicago Cubs. Fox fouled off four pitches before working a two-out walk on a close 3-2 pitch from Mark DiFelice, sending the Cubs to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers in 10...

  • Ryan: No financial restrictions on team (AP)
Texas team president Nolan Ryan said Friday that the club is not hamstrung by owner Tom Hicks' financial difficulties, a day after a report that Major League Baseball loaned millions to the team owner. "There haven't been any restrictions put on us," Ryan said. "I just think as we get closer to the trade deadline, we'll see what we might be able to be put together.
  • Quentin to begin rehab at Triple-A (AP)
Chicago White Sox outfielder Carlos Quentin, on the disabled list since May 29, will begin a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Charlotte. A.J. Burnett scattered six hits over seven innings, Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez homered, and New York beat Toronto 4-2 on Friday. The Yankees rebounded from Thursday night's 8-4 loss to Seattle for their eighth win in nine games. Burnett (7-4), who lost to his former team at Toronto on May 12, allowed two runs, struck out seven and walked two.

Sometimes the numbers don't tell the whole story. The Tigers will enter the weekend in first place in the American League Central despite just three wins in June from their two best pitchers.

Justin Verlander was 2-1 in June with a 2.91 ERA, while Edwin Jackson, sporting the same ERA, was 1-1. Verlander also lost his first July start.

The Tigers were 15-13 for the month, as a strong effort by the bullpen picked the club up.

The chief reason the aces didn't win more and the club wasn't able to get closer to 20 victories was the offense.

The Tigers hit just .249. Thanks to 35 home runs, they were able to score 108 times, one more run than they had in April but down from 137 in May.
