  • Halladay wins 17th, Phillies top Brewers (AP)
A little heads-up baserunning by one of Philadelphia's role players sent Roy Halladay to his 17th win. Placido Polanco hit a tying sacrifice fly and Wilson Valdez hustled home with the go-ahead run on an errant throw on the same play, lifting Halladay and the Phillies to a 5-4 win over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night.
  • Showalter wins 900th as O's top Rays 8-4 (AP)
Buck Showalter has been so busy trying to improve the Baltimore Orioles, the veteran manager didn't know he was on verge of his 900th win until his daughter reminded him in a phone call early in the week. "She made me aware of it. I'd forgotten it a little bit," Showalter said Saturday night after he reached the milestone with an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
  • Jurrjens keeps Braves alone atop NL East (AP)
Clinging to first place, the Atlanta Braves struck out 15 times, went 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and had two men thrown out on the bases. Jair Jurrjens more than compensated. The right-hander allowed only three hits in seven innings, and the Braves retained their one-game lead in the NL East by beating the Florida Marlins 2-0 Saturday night.

  • Jackson leads Tigers past Royals 6-4 (AP)
Austin Jackson hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning for his third hit of the game and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 6-4 on Saturday night. Jackson also hit a solo homer in the fifth for the Tigers (68-68), who have won three straight to reach .500 for the first time since Aug.
  • Tigers Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Sometimes the manager doesn't have to talk to a player to get his message across.

Sometimes sending the message through the media is just as effective.

Case in point: Ryan Perry, who pitched two perfect innings Friday night to get credit for Detroit's 11-inning, 9-5 victory at Kansas City.

Perry had pitched five times starting Aug. 24 and given up a run in three of those appearances. Two of those games came at the back end of back-to-backs.

"He needs to have a sense of more urgency than he does," manager Jim Leyland said. Asked to explain, he wouldn't.

"Just what I said," Leyland responded. "You guys are the journalists. I'll let you determine what was meant."

Leyland has smacked Perry's knuckles verbally before for not coming to the park...

  • Tigers beats Royals 9-5 win 4-run 11th inning (AP)
Will Rhymes started the game with an 11-pitch at bat, fouling off six offerings from Zack Greinke with two strikes. Rhymes was 0 for 4 before he hit a two-run triple in a four-run 11th inning to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 9-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. "I felt like I had good at-bats all night but had nothing to show for it," Rhymes said.
